RWCnf Features
==============
RWCnf is a PCBoard 14.x CNFN Menuing system that creates beautiful and
informative CNFN Conference Menu listings for your BBS callers.
Other CNFN generators that have been produced simply create a list of
Conference Numbers and Names; Not RWCnf!
List of Features;
-----------------
Ability to display any (or all) of NINE informational Fields:
-Conference Number -Number of Scripts
-Conference Name -Number of Bulletins
-Conference Description -Number of File Dirs
-Network Name (EchoMail) -Number of DOOR's
-Number of Active Messages
The Sysop may choose to include or omit ANY of these fields, and may
also specify the ORDER of their appearance. Additionally, EVERY FIELD
including the Menu and Titles (even the boxes if you use them) can be
Colorized to the Sysops tastes using the supplied Editor!
The CNFN report may optionally be SORTED by either Conference Number or
Name. Titles over the data may be included on every screen if desired,
Boxes around the Menu, Titles, and Data may optionally be turned On or
Off; Totals may be displayed at the end of the CNFN if desired too! The
Clear-Screen mode will clean-the-screen prior to display, and Sysop
created Text may be included in the CNFN if desired/needed.
For Network HUB's and NODE's (EchoMail Systems), you can now show the
Name of the Network AND the Number of Active MESSAGES for each Conf!
RWCnf is Fully Network SHARE compatible! It was developed, and is run
under DesqView in a tiny window using only 128K of Memory!
Best of all, once RWCnf is installed its FULLY AUTOMATIC! RWCnf can
automatically update the CNFN and catch any changes that you may have
made to your Conferences! NO MORE MANUAL EDITING of your CNFN every
time you add, change or remove Conferences!! (do we hear a collective
sigh of relief?!)
If you use RWDir, or any other RICHWARE software you already know how
easy to use and feature RICH our WARE's are!! We include a complete
Installation and Configuration program- the Sysop is not requested to
manually create or edit any CFG or other files! Installation is Quick
and Painless. Using the supplied EDITOR for customization and coloriz-
ation is both easy and Fun! No Two CNFN's need look alike!
We think you will be amazed at the quality of our software, its Richness
of features, ease of use, and greatly appreciate its ability to take
over for you the nasty chore of manually editing a CNFN! (Automatic!)
Following our 'Quick Start' instructions, you can have RWCnf installed
and a new CNFN produced in minutes (not hours!). Enjoy!

RWCnf SAMPLE CNFN
=================
The below EXAMPLE depicts a RWCnf-Generated CNFN Listing; it is using
ALL Available Fields; you may elect to Omit some fields. (Extra space
realized from omitting any Fields is added to the Description Field!)
Keep in mind that RWCnf-Generated CNFN Listings always remembers and
use's YOUR Color Schemes: The example below is only 'Black and White',
but EACH FIELD is actually able to use It's OWN Colors!

The Descriptions can be supplied either manually (in the EDITOR) or
Automatically extracted from your old CNFN, a HUB Conference listing or
any other file that contains the NAMES and DESCRIPTIONS (using the
supplied RWCNFDM.EXE utility). EchoMail Nodes will greatly appreciate
this feature. Once entered into the RWCnf system, thats it!
In the above example, notice that conferences with Zero Scripts, Dirs,
Blt's etc are Blank. This is done by Enabling the 'Blank-When-Zero'
Option! Of course if you want to see Zeros, simply turn the option off.
There are endless possibilities in creating your Unique CNFN with RWCnf
features!
Page 3
RWCnf Installation
==================
Create a DOS subdirectory on your Hard Disk called: \RWCNF and unpack
the archive into it. All RWCnf programs must run from this directory!
There is no reason to add \RWCNF to your DOS PATH!
You will notice that there are several RWCNF?.EXE programs included in
the product. Dont worry, we have provided a MENU Interface which should
help in understanding what they do; eventually, you most likely wont
need even the Menu any longer!
Run the RWCNF.EXE program to bring up the Menu NOW! Since this is your
initial Install of the product, you will need to run the following Menu
Options (in order!):
Option C to Configure the software.
Option U to Update (in this case Create) the RWCNF.DAT database
Option E to Edit, Colourize and Customize your CNFN appearence.
Option R to generate a CNFN REPORT file
These are all explained step-by-step if you will please continue read-
ing this documentation! Surely, many Sysops will 'Wing-it' from here on
and it really isnt hard to do- but if you'll just go ahead and at least
read the remainder of the 'Installation' documentation you will find
several ways to make things easier on yourself! (Trust us!) <g>
C O N F I G U R A T I O N
-------------------------
Select option "C" from the RWCNF MENU to begin Configuration. Since
this is the First time you have run it, the program will automatically
create the Files for you; a message to this effect will be displayed.
There is only a Single Configuration screen to deal with! When you get
to the bottom of the screen youll be prompted to S)ave C)hange or Q)uit
Be sure that you S)ave your screen!!
BBS NAME: Enter your BBS Name as you want it to appear in the CNFN. It
will AutoMatically be CENTERED for you, so dont place any
leading Spaces in the field. (The UnRegistered version will
use only the first 59 characters; Registered version all 77)
CNAMES LOCATION: The default "C:\PCB\MAIN\CNAMES" will already be shown
in this prompt. If it is correct as shown simply press ENTER
and continue on. If your CNAMES is located somewhere else,
type in its FULL Drive:\PATH\FILENAME where it can be found.
CNFN LOCATION: This is where you want RWCnf to place the CNFN file that
it produces. The Default "C:\PCB\MAIN\CNFN" will already be
shown; However, you might want to change this to something
else so RWCnf wont overwrite your existing CNFN until you're
satisfied with the output! Just type TESTCNFN for now...
Page 4

----------------------------------
SELECT FIELDS: (Y)es or (N)o. This is how you tell RWCnf which of the
Nine possible fields you want included in your CNFN report.
We suggest that for now that you simply answer "N" (no).
BOXES On/Off: The CNFN consists of three sections; The CNFN MENU,
TITLES, and DATA. Each section can have a BOX around it if
desired. The Default "Y" (yes) is provided. Changing any of
them to "N" will cause RWCnf to NOT display a BOX.
ZERO-SUPPRESS: If "Y" (yes), RWCnf will Not print ZERO's in the CNFN
fields; it will instead shown Blanks which is much easier on
the eyes.
LINES-per-SCREEN: If any number except 0 is entered, RWCnf will auto-
matically insert the Titles every xx lines so that when the
caller views subsequent screens of the CNFN he/she will
always have the Titles at the Top of each new screen. (Nice
feature: use 23)
CNFN TOTALS: If "Y" (yes), RWCnf will automatically provide Totals for
all selected fields at the END of the CNFN. Try it!
SORT-ORDER: CNFN output may be displayed in either Conference NUMBER or
Conference NAME order. Choose either 1) Number or 2) Name.
CLEAR SCREEN MODE: "Y" (yes) Enables CLEAR SCREEN MODE. The CNFN will
always start with a Cleared Screen, even between screens!
Also used in conjunction with Lines-per-Screen if set.
NETWORK NAMES: So that you wont have to type the Names of Networks over
and over, RWCnf allows you to assign up to 6 NET-ID's (1-6)
and thier Names.
Type "1" and enter the NAME of your first EchoMail NetWork.
Net Names may be up to eight (8) characters in length, You
may add leading blanks for shorter names to center them if
desired. When you are finished adding or changing NetId's,
enter "0" to leave this prompt.
Youre Done with CONFIG! Enter "S" to SAVE your screen. You will be
immediately returned to the RWCnf MENU.
You may return to the C)onfig screen and make changes anytime needed.
Please! Continue following the Documentation....!!
Page 5
RWCnf Installation
==================
U P D A T E
-----------
Select Option "U" from the RWCNF MENU to execute the Update. On initial
Installations, this will CREATE the RWCNF.DAT database. RWCnf is Stingy
on HD space! Each Conference will cause RWCnf to use a mere 128 Bytes
of storage. The RWCNF.DAT file is a RANDOM ACCESS FILE and should never
be loaded into an EDITOR!!
The RWCNFU program can also be executed from the CommandLine, you dont
need to run it from the RWCnf MENU ! It has a Single optional command-
line parameter: /R which will cause it to run the Report program after
the Update is completed. See the section concerning Updating RWCNF.DAT
in your EVENT.SYS.
E D I T / C U T O M I Z E
-------------------------
It is Not necessary for you to run this Option just yet, however you
might want to. Its probably the most Fun program of the bunch, and it
packs a powerful punch! This is where you can Colourize and perform
other customizations on the appearence of your CNFN output. If you
want to try it out now, Select Option "E" from the RWCnf MENU and then
proceed to the EDITOR DOCUMENTATION Section for help if needed.
Create the CNFN R E P O R T
----------------------------
Select Option "R" from the RWCnf MENU to Run the Report generating
program: "RWCNFR.EXE". This will create the CNFN using the RWCNF.DAT
database that you made when you ran the U)pdate program. If you didnt
povide accurate filenames in the Config, the program will ABORT!
You can now look at your New CNFN!! The RWCnf CNFN output contains the
PCBoard "@Xyy" Color Codes and other "@X" variables. If you type the
CNFN to the screen it will be all cluttered if your not using a special
ANSI driver! ANSI-F is a good utility for this purpose. Another way
you could view the screen with the PCBoard codes translated is to go
into PCBSETUP and specify the file as being a Bulletin and view it as
such from within PCBOARD.EXE. (Sysop Local Logon)
Basically, youre finished with the INSTALLATION of RWCnf! Surely youll
want to make some customizations like colours, NetWork Assignments and
FIELD selections- you can change these anytime you want using the C)
Config program and/or the E) Editor program.
Important: DESCRIPTIONS dont "HAVE TO" be entered Manually!!! You can
use the supplied RWCNFDM.EXE utility program to automatically get them
from your old(er) CNFN or any other text files that contain NAMES and
the DESCRIPTIONS!! See the RWCNFDM.DOC !!
Page 6
R W C N F F I E L D S
=======================
Using the supplied RWCNFC.EXE program, you can Configure your CNFN to
display any or all of Nine Fields available in RWCnf. They can also be
placed in any order you choose!
Important>>> The DESCRIPTION field is NOT OPTIONAL! You MUST select the
Description field; if you dont, it will automatically be added (forced)
The LENGTH of the DESCRIPTION field is 26 bytes when ALL other fields
are selected. If you OMIT (dont select) any of the fields (such as the
# of SCRipts) the saved space from that field is given to the DESCrip-
tion Field to make it longer!
The following is a listing and brief explanation of each of the NINE
possible fields you may choose to include in your CNFN.
Conf Area
---------
This is simply the Conference Number. Main Board is always shown as 0.
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
Conference Name
---------------
The Name of the Conference as found in CNAMES. It can be up to 13 bytes
long and you can change it only through PCBSETUP and running the RWCnf
Update program.
If NOT selected 14 bytes will be added to the length of the Description
Conference Description
----------------------
As previously mentioned, this Field MUST be selected! If YOU dont, the
Program WILL!
Descriptions can be AutoMatically retrieved from your old CNFN, a
Network CONFLIST, or any other text file that contain both the NAME and
DESCRIPTIONS. The "RWCNFDM.EXE" program is a utility supplied for this
purpose. Descriptions can also be entered Manually one-at-a-time using
the supplied EDITOR program "RWCNFE.EXE" (Option E in the RWCnf MENU).
This field is VARIABLE in LENGTH. It can be made LONGER by omitting
other Fields from the output!
Number of Scripts
-----------------
The PCBoard SCRIPT.LST file(s) tell RWCnf how many Script Questionaires
available inside each conference. If a Conference uses the same SCRIPT.
LST filename as the MAIN BOARD (Conference 0), they WONT BE COUNTED!!
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
Page 7
R W C N F F I E L D S Cont'd
=======================
Number of Bulletins
-------------------
The PCBoard BLT.LST file(s) tell RWCnf how many Bulletins are presently
available inside each conference. If a Conference uses the same BLT.LST
filename as the MAIN BOARD (Conference 0), they WONT BE COUNTED!!
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
Number of DOORS
---------------
The PCBoard DOOR.LST file(s) tell RWCnf how many DOOR's are presently
available inside each conference. If a Conference uses the same DOOR.
LST filename as the MAIN BOARD (Conference 0), they WONT BE COUNTED!!
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
Number of FILE DIRS
-------------------
The PCBoard DIR.LST file(s) tell RWCnf how many File Directories are
available inside each conference. If a Conference uses the same DIR.LST
filename as the MAIN BOARD (Conference 0), they WONT BE COUNTED!!
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
Number of MESSAGES
------------------
RWCnf extracts this information from the PCBoard Message Base File(s)
directly. These are 'ACTIVE MESSAGES', Not necessarily the TOTAL # of
Messages, and certainly not just the 'High Message Number'! If youre a
member of an EchoMail Network, these number of messages obviously will
change after every mail run! If you select this Field, be sure to
install the RWCNFU program in your EVENT after each NetMail run to keep
this information up-to-date!!
If NOT selected 5 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
NETWORK NAME
------------
Most PCBoard Sysops are participating in one or more EchoMail Networks.
In the C)onfig, you were given an oppertunity to Enter the Names of up
to Six (6) NetWorks (1 through 6). The Names may be up to 8 characters
long, and may also contain leading blanks for centering if desired. The
NetWork ID Numbers (1-6) are entered in the EDITOR to assign a NEtName
to each Conference (or Range of Conferences).
If NOT selected 9 bytes will be added to the length of the Description.
ALL FIELDS can have thier OWN COLOR(s)! The COLOR(s) for a field can
change from Conference Line to Conference Line too!
Page 8
The RWCnf EDITOR
----------------
The Editor (RWCNFE.EXE) allows you to Edit and Customize the appearence
of the CNFN produced by RWCnf. With it you can COLORIZE Fields
individually or Globally, assign NetWork Names, Enter Descriptions,
Turn Boxes On and Off and more...
The Editor does NOT simply edit the CNFN file itself! It modifies the
RWCNF.CFG and .DAT files so that the next time you execute the Report
program (RWCNFR.EXE) it will produce a file that looks Just like what
you saw (edited) in the EDITOR! Any time you use the Editor to change
something, you must run the RWCNFR program to produce the new CNFN
File!!
There is a Status Line with Help Information in it at the bottom of the
Editor's screen to remind you of the Functions and what KEYS to press.
What follows is a more thorough explanation of the Functions.
The "" symbol on the screen will be your guide... it's a "Cursor" that
shows you where you are.
The Editor screen is comprised of THREE Sections: MENU, TITLES, and
Conference DATA records. The MENU and TITLES are ALWAYS displayed on
the screen. Up to Ten (10) Conference Records will be displayed at any
time.
Scrolling though Conference DATA Records
----------------------------------------
The PgUP and PgDN will scroll the display 10 records at a time, up or
down. (Be sure your NUM LOCKs if OFF!)
ALT-J will allow you to directly JUMP to a Conference Number and bring
it into the Display area. Faster than PgUp/Dn if you have a long way to
go!
HOME and END keys (NUM LOCKs OFF!) will take you to TOP and BOTTOM of
the Conference DATA records.
Moving the "Cursor"
-------------------
Make Sure your NUM LOCKs is OFF! The arrow keys move the cursor in the
same direction /up/down/left/right through different fields and records
on the current screen.
Colorizing Keys
---------------
F1 and F2 are used to change the FOREGround color of the Current Field.
F1 makes the colors go DOWN, F2 goes UP. There are 16 possible FOREG-
round colors; Black through White (0 through 7), then the same colors
in HIGH INSTENSITY (8 through 15). You cannot make any colors 'Blink'!
F3 and F4 control the BACKGround colors of the current Field. F3 goes
DOWN and F4 goes UP. There are 8 possible BACKGround colors (0 thru 7).
Page 9
The RWCnf EDITOR
----------------
Colorizing Keys Cont'd
---------------
Using F1 through F4 you can choose any ForeGround/BackGround color
combination you like; Except for "Black on Black" which is not only
"invisible" but is impossible with PCBoard "@Xyy" Color Codes! (@X00 is
a Function, not a Color)
ALT-P allows you to GLOBALLY assign the same colors to any Range of
Conferences. Say you want all your Descriptions in Conferences 10 thru
25 to be Green. Position the cursor in the Description Field of Conf 10
and use F1-F4 to set the color to Green. Then Press ALT-P to globally
"PAINT" the same field FROM Conference 10 TO Conference 25. (A prompt
comes up after pressing ALT-P that asks for From/To Conference numbers)
Colorizing the MENU
-------------------
Press ALT-M to colorize the different components of the MENU. Use the
F1-F4 Keys as usual to change colors. The LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys
will move you around the different fields of the Menu. You can change
the Colors of the BBSNAME, DATE & TIME, the Header, and the UPDATED
Date & Time sections any way desired.
Colorizing the TITLES
---------------------
Press ALT-T to colorize the different components of the TITLES. Use the
F1-F4 Keys as usual to change colors. The LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys
will move you around the different fields of the TITLE. You can change
the Colors of each Title item shown for all the fields you Selected
for Display in the CNFN.
Colorizing the BOXES
--------------------
If you are using BOXES around any part of the CNFN, pressing F10 will
allow you pick which of the BOXES you want to colorize. If you choose
to colorize a BOX that you havent turned ON, you wont be able to see
what youre doing!
NOTES
-----
CNFN's with several different colors on a line will display Slower to
your callers over a modem.
The editor Beeps when you have caused a field to have the same Fore &
Back ground colors! (just letting you know its invisible!)
Watch your REDS! Colors #4 and #6 look similar, but theyre Different!
Page 10
The RWCnf EDITOR
----------------
Toggle BOXES ON/OFF
-------------------
You dont need to go into the C)onfig screens to turn Boxes On or Off.
F5 toggles the MENU BOX, F6 the TITLES BOX, and F7 the DATA BOX.
Pressing F5 - F7 when the Box is ON turns if OFF; or when its OFF it
will then Turn it back ON. (its a toggle switch)
BLANK-WHEN-ZERO (BWZ)
---------------------
Like the Box Toggle(s), you dont need to go into C)onfig to turn the
ZERO-SUPPRESS On/or Off. Use F8 to toggle the option.
ALT-N NET-ID
-------------
This function allows you to assign a Network Number to a RANGE of
Conferences. Lets say your Conferences 10 through 25 are participating
in the STARKNET Network, and that you have assigned STARKNET as Net-ID
#2 in the C)onfig. After pressing ALT-N, you will be asked for the
Net-Id Number, the starting and Ending Conference numbers to assign it
to. Real Easy!
You can also change a Conferences Net-Id by pressing ENTER while the
cursor is positioned in the NetWork Name Field. (One at a time though)
EXITING THE EDITOR
------------------
Easy; ALT-X will immediately exit the program. All changes made while
in the editor are automatically saved as you make them! There is no
way to 'Abort' your changes...
The EDITOR modifies both the RWCNF.CFG and RWCNF.DAT files; NOT the
actual CNFN! Although the Editor is a WYSIWYG (WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet)
program, the RWCNFR.EXE program is the one that actually creates your
CNFN file!! Run it every time after you have exited the editor!
The RWCNF.CFG and .DAT files are BOTH RANDOM FILES. DO NOT! load either
of them into any editor or you may corrupt them!!
The EDITOR can be accessed either from the RWCnf MENU as Option "E", or
from the DOS CommandLine as: RWCNFE.EXE
If any program could ever be called "Fun", the Editor is it!
Page 11
Getting DESCRIPTIONS
====================
For Large PCBoard systems with many Conferences, typing in each and
every Conference Description could be a somewhat tedious task !
RWCnf comes supplied with a utility program called RWCNFDM.EXE; it is
able to read in a text file such as your old CNFN, extract the
Descriptions from it and place them into RWCnf, AutoMatically. You
should find this to be of great help.
RWCNFDM (Description Merge program) has a few special requirements that
you should be aware of. First, the text file must have both the Conf.
NAME and its DESCRIPTION on the SAME LINE, secondly, the NAMES in the
listing Must Match YOUR NAMES (in PCBSETUP) EXACTLY (case unimportant)
in order for the program to work properly. You will need to load your
source file into an editor and determine the starting position and the
length of both NAME and Description. That it! RWCNFDM will do the rest!
If you are participating in an EchoMail Network, you probably can
obtain a CONFLIST which contains the Names and Descriptions of all the
Conferences in the Network from your HUB or Central System. Ideally,
your BBS should be using the Same Names and Descriptions for your
echoed conferences anyway!
To use the Description Merge program RWCNFDM.EXE, refer to the DOC File
named RWCNFDM.DOC.
You may also enter Descriptions manually, one at a time inside the
supplied EDITOR program RWCNFE.EXE, or option "E" from the RWCnf MENU.
Once inside the Editor, you can press ALT-D to enter a Description, or
by pressing ENTER while the cursor is inside the Description Field.
This really isnt so bad and counts towards College Credits in Typing
101. (A course all sysops should have taken somewhere in thier
career).
Since descriptions can be of varying length depending upon how many
fields you select for display using RWCnf, plan ahead! Enter your
Descriptions only AFTER you have decided which other fields you will be
selecting- that way you will know the length of the Description field
before you spend the time entering them!
Merging Sysop Text Files
========================
The Sysop may include text files of his or her own creation in the CNFN
file produced by RWCNFR. The text files must be named "$RWCNF1.MSG" and
"$RWCNF2.MSG", and Must be located in the same directory as the .CFG &
.DAT files.
$RWDIR1.MSG if it exists, will be Merged at the BEGINing of the CNFN;
$RWCNF2.MSG if it exists, will be Merged at the END of the CNFN. There
are Sample files included with the archive. PCBoard "@X" color codes
and variables may or may not be included... be sure to place a @WAIT@,
or @MORE@, or @PAUSE@ at the End of $RWCNF1.MSG otherwise it may scroll
off the screen too quickly for anyone to read!
Page 12
Running the UPDATE in EVENT.SYS
===============================
You will most likely want to keep your CNFN routinely updated so as to
always display current information; especially if you run EchoMail! The
update program is SAFE to run inside your EVENT, and it's Fast!
Somewhere in your EVENT.SYS, AFTER your NetMail IMPORT if you have one,
execute:
cd\RWCNF * This will put you into our directory
RWCNFU /R * Run the Update, then Report programs
Thats it! Youll have a current CNFN every day! Your callers will surely
appreciate that!!
Remeber to run RWCNFU /R after you make any PCBSETUP changes that may
affect your Conferences and CNFN !!

an Evaluation Period. If after 60 days you continue to use this utility you
are expected to pay for it. (Registration).
The cost of Registration for use beyond 60 days is only Twenty Dollars (U.S
funds Only) You may Download the REGISTERED VERSION of RWCnf from our software
support BBS "Richware ShareWare" after we recieve your payment. The REGISTERED
VERSION will not place the "(c) IDS" Notice in your CNFN Menu, and the
space it took will be available to you for a longer BBS NAME.
In any such case, IDS will remain the owner of the program(s) and other files
which comprise the RWCnf utility- you may not alter the program(s) in any way,
or otherwise tamper with its operation.
IDS disclaims any responsibility for the performance of any component of RWCnf
by its use, or your inability to use; including any lost profits from any such
use or misuse.
In lieu of holding back on any features (crippleware), we have instead chosen
to offer a Full-Featured and Fully-Capable ShareWare Evaluation version which
is functional for a period not longer than sixty-six days. (expireware)
You need to Register the program(s) in order to continue using RWCnf beyond
the Evaluation Period. RWCnf is a Commercial product and is "For Sale"; it is
NOT (freeware) !
IDS is an Illinois corporation doing business as a Software Development
company RWCnf is NOT Public Domain software!
